If you have believed that Jesus Christ died as a substitute for you, you are a Christian, and God has a plan and purpose for your life.
Who is influencing your life? It is either the kingdom of darkness that controls the cosmic system in which we live, or you are allowing God the Holy Spirit to teach God’s Word to you in order to guide and direct your thoughts and actions through an understanding and application of Bible doctrine, which is the MIND OF CHRIST.
“And be not conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so you may prove (learn to have discernment about) what is the good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God.” (Romans 12:2)
How is it possible to be guided by the Holy Spirit and have your life glorify the Lord? First, you must realize that, even though you are a believer, you still have a very active sin nature that wants to have its own way with you, and the Holy Spirit who indwells you, wants to control and guide your life. In the seventh chapter of the book of Romans, the apostle Paul tells about the struggle he experienced between his sinful nature and his new nature.
When you decide that you want your life to glorify the Lord, you must acknowledge any known sin in your life to God the Father. The principle of confessing sin and seeing who is actually affected by our sins can be seen in Psalm 51:3,4a. King David said it like this:
“I acknowledge my transgression, and my sin is ever before me. Against You and You only have I sinned and done this evil in Your sight.” (ALL sin is against God)
When you desire to know God’s will for your life, He will provide a prepared pastor/teacher who knows the original languages of scripture and can teach the Word of God accurately.
1 Peter 2:2 give good advice to the new believer: “As a newborn baby, desire the sincere milk of the Word, that you may grow by receiving it.”
Our faith can only be strengthened through a daily, personal intake of the Word of God, and Romans 10:17 tells us that “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.”
Sound, accurate Bible teaching promotes spiritual growth. The Lord tells us in Isaiah 28:9,10 that knowledge of God’s Word is attained by first learning and applying simple truths, and then as we grow we will be able to understand more complex doctrines of the Word.
“To whom shall He teach knowledge, and whom shall He make to understand doctrine? Those who have been weaned from milk and taken away from the breast. For precept must be upon precept; line upon line; here a little, and there a little.”
When we were little children, we learned by simple words and illustrations, and the same is true in our spiritual growth.
Are you motivated to understand God’s plan and purpose for your life?
